Orso - Anchorage, Alaska

It was a long flight to Alaska and needless to say, we were hungry when we got to our hotel. We asked various locals (on the flight out too) where to go eat and they definitely all had their own opinions but there is one name that consistantly came up, Orso. We wanted good, fresh local seafood without paying an arm and a leg so we decided to give it a try. Orso is described as "Alaska grown whenever available then prepared in the flavors and styles of the Mediterranean." They cater to most dietery needs and even offer local brews from their sister restaraunt Glacier Brewhouse. The Brewhouse is a great place to grab a beer, or two, and even a bite to eat (we went there the next night).

Now the nice thing about going out to eat at night in Anchorage is that it stays light until well after 11:30pm in the early summer, later as the summer advances. So, it was completely light when we left our hotel and still light out when we arrived back after dinner! Orso is conveniently located in downtown Anchorage and well within walking distance of most hotels. When we arrived it was quite crowded even though it was pretty late (I guess everyone else forgot it wasn't 5 in the afternoon too), but we found a cozy spot near the bar, our favorite area. Even if you're not a lush, the bar arrangement is pretty spectacular and the entire restaraunt has a great ambiance. The wait staff were all friendly and bared with us asking them all who is actually born and raised in Alaska...our waitress was, but not many others.

We had to start with the Alaskan Seafood Chowder. Now, I've had some of the best clam chowder the east coast has to offer, but with the addition of smoked salmon and bacon this chowder gave them all a run for their money. We wanted to taste a little of their signature Mediterranean flare so we ordered the Mediterranean Sliders and were quite pleased with our selection. When we special ordered a flat bread, the manager Martin was more than accomodating and he said he might even put it on the menu it sounded so good. The creation had flash seared shrimp, oyster mushrooms, spinach, fresh basil, a 5 cheese blend and bacon! Believe or not, we still had room for more food and took Martins suggestion of the Chilled Seafood Verde, wow! It had the right amount of spice and flavor not too mention the outstanding presentation. We were barely able to stuff the delicious Flash Seared Crab Cakes in, which were accented with a pleasant dill flavor. We felt it was best to skip dessert and instead waddled back to our hotel filled to the gill and completely satisfied.  

Thank you to Martin and all the staff at Orso and the Glacier Brewhouse for showing us such a deliciously good time. We will definitely be back on our next trip to Anchorage. If you are near Anchorage be sure to grab a brew and dine here for you won't be disappointed.  Oh, and definitely let them know that On The Go Cooking Show sent you. :)

Here is a little more about our winner: I am Freshman and love to cook. My passion was sparked by my mother, who is a fantastic cook. Almost every night I would sit at the counter and watch her make dinner, often without a recipe. Eventually, I joined in. I started a food blog last summer (yummysoyummy.blogspot.com), although with school starting I haven't been able to update it. My photography and cooking have come a long way since then! 

My recipe was inspired from a Turkish cooking class my grandmother took. She sent me the recipe and I adapted it while making it. They turned out delicious, although a bit messy, but I thought they would be perfect for On The Go Cooking Show. I hope to continue to grow as a chef as I go through school and can't wait to vote on future OTGCS competitions!

Sherri Williams is a grand prize winner of our Quick & Easy Recipe Contest with her submission: Perfect Peachy Prosciutto Salad. She won a high quality pan from 360 Cookware as well as product from us and some of our other sponsers. Her Grilled Squash with Balsamic Drizzle was a close second and I thoroughly enjoyed making this dish at home, yum! Her recipes are not only quick and easy they are delicious and healthy. After receiving her new pan, Sherri cooked up one of her favorite dishes, Southern Style Fresh Green Beans, and was amazed at how fast her meal was ready. Although I haven't met Sherri Williams in person her passion and loving heart shines through her words and her recipes. Keep on Cooking Sherri! 

Here is a little more about our winner: My name is Sherri Williams, my family and friends call me “Logan”. I’m originally from Danville Virginia; I've lived in Florida for over 19 years. After graduating from high school I joined the Army where I met the love of my life, Big Roy. We have been married for over 30 years. We have one gifted and talented son, Roy Jr. 29 and a beautiful daughter-in-law Tina. As long as I can remember, I've always loved cooking; Growing up, my siblings and I were introduced to many different cuisines by my stepfather "Daddy". He was a retired Marine who had the opportunity to travel the world. We were eager and willing to learn about different cultures and taste what they were eaten. Over the years, I've fused different cuisines with my cooking. What an International Love Affair! Serving in the military and married to a now retired soldier, I got to expand my knowledge on my cooking adventures. I've been blessed to meet so many wonderful people from around the world and from all walks of life that have had a tremendous impact on my life and cooking. My greatest cooking inspiration was my Grandma Logan. She was the best cook I've ever known. I've learned so much from my family, acquaintances’, cooking shows, recipe clubs, etc. Entertaining with family and friends brings me great joy. They are always willing to try “Logan’s” latest creations. I also love to share, swap recipes and enter recipe contests.  It’s a pleasure to interact on a daily basis with die-hard, self-taught home cooks and others just like me. Food brings us together. There is no greater joy than breaking bread with family and friends, enjoying good conversation, seeing the smiles on their faces, twinkle in their eyes, hearing the laughter and feeling the love in their hearts all in the name of FOOD!  Cooking with Passion, SW

Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

Yellowstone National Park, WY - Leaving Jackson Hole, we headed up through the Grand Teton Park directly into Yellowstone National Park. We've been through the Southern and Western portions of the park so we did minimal sight seeing on this trip. We definitely need to travel through the northern and western areas of Yellowstone - and if you have any suggestions as to what we need to see please post them. I did include some photos we took on our honeymoon from 2009 as well as some recent ones.

There are many geysers in the park as well as brilliantly blue pools, but don't be tempted to jump into these hot springs - or you will regret it. Our backstory on Old Faithful is that Brett had never seen it and back in 2009 was the first time he saw it - from about a mile and a half away! We had hiked the trail up to the top of Geyser hill and watched the eruption to which Brett exclaimed "It's not that big." So, I highly recommend that your first time seeing this should be spent sitting on a bench right up close for it doesn't have quite the same effect looking at it from a distance and there was no way we were going to wait until it erupted again because we just had too much to see.

The times of eruptions can be between 35 minutes and 2 hours, and the height is 90 to 180 feet. OTGCookingShow Tip: As the predicted time approaches grab a seat on the benches (they sit about 300 ft away from the geyser) and relax. Old Faithful likes to tease a bit and will inevitably get the impatient all riled up. There is usually about 20 minutes of small bursts and bubbles before the main attraction comes. I do believe it is worth the wait, but if you plan on only seeing it once in your life - see it up close and personal. If you do plan on seeing it again hike Geyser Hill and enjoy the splendor from a distance. Another highlight on this leg of our trip was that we made it to Old Faithful just in time to meet up with my family for lunch and say our goodbye's until next time. They had taken a longer route through Idaho but we both happened to have perfect timing and I got to squeeze my beautiful little niece one more time!

Yellowstone Bear World - Rexburg, Idaho

Yellowstone Bear World, Rexburg, Idaho - On our way down from Montana we had to make a stop at Yellowstone Bear World, in Rexburg, Idaho since we didn't have any bear encounters in Wyoming or Montana. I wanted to see a bear so badly I decided it was perfectly okay to pay to see them. Yellowstone Bear World allows you to drive through the park from the comfort of your own vehicle including cars, RVs and even Semis, as many times as you want!  The best part is that we didn't have to unhook the Cook'n Cruiser from our motor coach to go through the park - very convenient! The entrance fee also includes a trip to the petting zoo that is not quite your average petting zoo.

Most of the animals you can pet here you usually only see on the animal channel or possibly darting out in front of your car on a mountain road. Granted they do have the norm, pigs, chickens and goats but they are scattered amongst peacocks, deer and even a white elk! I personally had never even heard of a white elk and I grew up in the mountains of Colorado, crazy! The park has an abundance of elk, deer, bears, a few wolves, a moose and more. The staff is friendly and informative.  In fact, Stacey showed us how you can feed the baby bears - very carefully and even take a picture with them or feed them, but there is an extra charge. After taking about 1,500 pictures (mostly of the baby bear cubs playing and wrestling) we ended our visit in the gift shop where you can take your own cute cuddly souvenir home with you.  If you missed seeing wildlife in Yellowstone, or even if you didn't, it's worth the entrance fee to get the up close and personal experience you get at Bear World. We then spent a relaxing evening at the Village of Trees RV Resort in Declo, ID on our trek towards Boise. It is conveniently located right off the highway and only a two-minute walk from the Snake River. The staff was very friendly, especially Colleen, but they all made us feel right at home, Thank you!

Wine Country - Paso Robles, California

Wine Country ' Paso Robles, California. Our favorite place to stay during our visit is Wine Country RV Resort. Aside from the awesome staff, they offer many great amenities. Including 2 full size kitchens in their enormous clubhouse, a small gym that provides a great workout, and two pools (one that's adults only). In addition there's a hill on the property that is perfect for any level of endurance training. After your workout spend a day visiting any of the numerous wineries in the area sure to please the palate of even the most discriminative wine connoisseur. Shuttles run regularly and will take you winery hopping - so leave the car keys at home. And if wine isn't your thing there are still lots of things to see and do. For instance, the Hearst Castle or the beautiful Pacific Ocean is only a short drive and there's never a shortage of great restaurants or friendly people. Paso Robles has such a small town feel and each time we return we're welcomed back by friendly faces.

Willie Nelson Concert - Campe Verde, Arizona

Montezuma Castle National Monument/Willie Nelson Concert Campe Verde, Arizona-We made it to Distant Drums RV Resort in Campe Verde, AZ a day early so we took the time to explore.  Brett took me to go see the Montezuma Castle National Monument, which is really an old native American cliff dwelling. There was a small fee for entry. We spent some time in the visitors center reading a lot of the history on the dwellings and the area.

The amazing part was to think how they built, maintained and survived in the side of a cliff back in the days there were no cranes, elevators, or even hand rails for that matter. It's a small park but it's full of history and only a 20 minute drive from Campe Verde. That night we took a shuttle to Cliff Castle Casino for the Willie Nelson concert and fortunately the weather held out, although it had been threatening most of the afternoon. Willie holds a place in my heart because as a kid I listened to him and he had a house nearby in my hometown of Colorado. My first album I ever bought was "Half Nelson" at 8 years old. I still think it's one of his best albums ever. We ended up getting tickets off Craig's List at the last minute because I decided I wasn't sure how many more opportunities I would get to see Willie in concert. The man is 80 years old (or somewhere there abouts) and he only forgot a couple of lines to one song - that's impressive! He really did rock out and put on a great show but there was definitely no encore, must have been past his bedtime.

Wild Vines-Anthem, AZ

The portobello mushroom sandwich created by Chef Caesar Vasquez at Wild Vines in Anthem, AZ was definitely the highlight. Owners Nancy Ayers recently purchased the restaurant from previous owners and have created a relaxing atmosphere within a quaint community of friendly faces. Wild Vines has our 'On The Go' vote!
